A Message from Dr. Lori Mowbray About Vision Therapy at Home
A Little Background
I have been directing vision therapy programs at the Minnesota Vision Therapy Center for the past fifteen years. During that time, I have been been fortunate to help thousands of children and adults conquer such diagnoses as ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and many other labels, and go on to lead lives of great achievement and productivity. I often receive letters, emails, and phone calls from patients or parents of patients who are seeing the benefits of their vision therapy programs many years later.
This is a wonderful profession to be in, but there are also some great frustrations. The main frustration that I experience is that there are millions of people suffering from learning-related visual problems that are not getting treatment. Many of those have not heard about this therapy and therefore are not aware that they can be helped.
However, a great number of people know that they have the problem but can't get treatment. Since there are few developmental optometrists in the world at this time, many people simply do not live within driving distance of a vision therapy center. Or they live within driving distance but cannot take the time to travel to the weekly appointments which could last up to a year. Or, finally, since insurance usually doesn't cover vision therapy services, they simply can't afford it in this economy.
So what can be done to help these people so that they can break through the barriers that keep them from achieving?
Why Vision Therapy at Home?
So I decided that it was necessary to design a vision therapy program that could overcome the obstacles of lack of availability, lack of travel time, and lack of finances so that many more people could enjoy the benefits of a vision therapy program.
Obviously, this program cannot take the place of a one-on-one in-office vision therapy program where the activities can be altered as needed for each individual patient. However, there are a lot of activities that can be done at home very effectively and enable those who don't have other options to get many of the benefits of an in-office program.
I set about developing a home vision therapy program that incorporated most of the elements of an in-office program including foundational activities that require body movement in space as well as an exceptional computerized therapy program which contains the most up-to-date technology available. This program is laid out so that the individual can easily follow along with the activities on DVDs and keep track of progress in the workbooks.
Previously the few home vision therapy programs available have involved computer programs or small manuals, but I could not find a program that incorporated all of the aspects that are necessary for a complete vision therapy program designed by board-certified developmental optometrist.
So Vision Therapy at Home was born to fill a need that I see growing every day. Many of the individuals that complete the VT@H program will probably elect to go through an in-office program later to maximize the results they receive through this program. But, for those that cannot do so, VT@H will give them great benefits that could not be achieved without this revolutionary new program.
Enjoy!
